Sexual Addiction in The African-American Male Culture

Watching excessive porno, constant thoughts, cravings, and substituting sex for love are all signs that many African-American Males have a sex addiction

In today's society of sexual freedoms and diversity, almost anything goes. With the bombardment of sex in the media, sex in entertainment and sex just about everywhere else, there is a quiet storm brewing beneath the mask of sex, sex, and more sex. Feeling as if they are just living up to the myth and the legend of African-American male sexuality, many of us do not realize that we are faced with a much more serious dilemma. Quietly, in an almost harmless way sexual addiction is taking the African-American Male by storm.

Why?

Well, for the most part it is very hard to detect, primarily because Many African-American men have so thoroughly bought into the myth and the legend of what their sex-life is supposed to be like, that when obsessive and compulsive behaviors arise they go undetected. Left unchecked, these behaviors can quickly spiral out of control and turn into an addiction.

From the outside looking in, you just may not see enough of the signs, or know the signs to look for. If you are someone who may be suffering from a sexual addiction, you probably think that your behavior is normal and healthy, or that you are just that much more superior in carnal matters.

Who, in the African-American male's social network, who wants to admit, or even dare to think that they have a sexual problem? Especially because when many African-American males think of sex, and sexually related problems, we think of impotency, infertility, or any other derogatory term that would suggest some sort of weakness or deficiency.

However, for those that can't seem to get enough, we would wonder, "How is that a problem?" That is usually the social response in the African-American males' network. The problem is that the constant huger and perceived need for more has lead many an African-American men into harmful and, at times, potentially life threatening situations.

Not to mention what it has done to the core of African-American families. The lying and deceit used to cover up one's wrong doings has all but destroyed the climate of a healthy relationship between African-American men and women.

A Possible Solution

Communication: African-American men need to communicate earnestly, first with themselves – what are you really doing? Is it necessary to have one more notch on your belt? Check your motives. Are you after her because of a real and genuine attraction, or are you being driven and compelled for reasons that you can't explain?
